Amcham: Malaysia will still get steady FDI
MALAYSIA will continue to receive a steady flow of foreign direct investment (FDI), especially from the United States, according to the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Amcham).

“I think the opportunity for Malaysia to continuously attract FDI is endless,” president Vincent Leusner said yesterday.

“The growth has been steady from 2003 to 2005. It can be the same or better next year,” he told reporters at a ceremony to announce the 2005 Young Enterprise Programme Achievers’ Showcase in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Leusner, Malaysia was attractive mainly due to its central location in the region, state-of-the-art infrastructure, business-friendly government, easy access to the capital market, and multi-language capability and high literacy among its citizens.

“So, I don’t see why Malaysia shouldn’t be able to get the same level of FDI (in 2006), if not more in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amcham’s membership has grown steadily to 470 members from 330 different companies.

“American companies’ presence here is very significant as they employ more then 50,000 Malaysians,” Leusner said, pointing out that 90% of Dell Inc’s laptops sold in the US were being manufactured in Malaysia.

Leusner also said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s recent visits to London and New York to promote Malaysia was a good step forward.

“I think that’s what needs to be done. Keep trying to get the word out because Malaysia is a good place to do business. In some ways, Malaysia is still an undiscovered jewel among foreign businessmen,” he added. – Bernama
