According to the annual survey of industries, there are more registered factories and other small, medium and large manufacturing centers in Cochin than in any other part of Kerala. Known as the ‘business capital of Kerala’, there is a boom in all sectors and industries. The Real Estate in Cochin is also now part of these economic developments. Real estate values in Cochin are continuously appreciating mainly due to the increasing investments from overseas destinations.

Till recent times almost all the major industries in Cochin were located in the urban areas. Due to the continuing appreciation in land values, the industries located in the urban centers are finding it difficult to expand further and thus they have started to foray into the rural areas. According to a recent survey, there is a major move from the urban to the rural areas by the leading business houses.

Until recent times, the leading entrepreneurs and industrialists considered Kerala as a hostile place and unfit to set up an industry. But in recent times this image has been totally eradicated. Today those entrepreneurs who shied away from this land blessed with abundant natural resources are now flocking to obtain a foothold in some way or the other.

Industrialization is the main cause of urbanization in Cochin even though the spatial distribution of industries is uneven in Kerala. The government and the town planning authorities in Cochin are now toying with the idea of dealing with this situation through a multipronged policy. All the existing industries and the newer ones being set up have been brought under stringent regulatory controls so as to promote quality control.
